Helvetas - About Us

Our local teams are active in 35 partner countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe. We are committed to fair opportunities worldwide — through access to clean drinking water, quality education and civic participation.

Independent. Committed. Globally networked.

Helvetas is a leading Swiss organization for development cooperation and humanitarian response – denominationally neutral and politically independent. As an association with a strong membership base in Switzerland, we are committed to a fairer world worldwide. Our sister organizations in the USA and Germany, our membership in Alliance2015, and our sponsorship of Alliance Sud all strengthen our global network.

Our vision

Our vision is of a just world in which all people live self-determined lives in dignity and security, use natural resources sustainably and care for the environment.

Our mission

Helvetas supports disadvantaged people and communities in low- and middle-income countries who want to actively improve their living conditions. Through partnership-based development cooperation, we promote pathways for self-help and create fair opportunities for all. We provide humanitarian aid following disasters and in times of crisis.

We stand up for fundamental rights and strengthen our partners in development policy issues. We combat the root causes of poverty through sustainable projects.

In Switzerland, we are committed to a coherent foreign and economic policy that meets the needs of people in developing and transitional countries.

Our values

Human rights

We promote and protect political, social, economic, environmental and cultural rights for all.

Self-determination

Our work is based on participatory, self-determined development and humanitarian action in times of crisis.

Equality

We are committed to social justice and fair opportunities, regardless of origin or identity.

Partnership

Our commitment is based on responsibility, cooperation and partnerships worldwide.

Our commitment

Water, food and climate

Two billion people have no access to clean drinking water, and climate change is threatening food security. Helvetas improves water supplies, promotes hygiene and advocates fair water distribution.

We strengthen food systems through land rights, climate-adapted cultivation methods and better access to food. We facilitate access to markets, schools and health centers through suspension bridges and rural roads. Communities are empowered to better protect themselves against the consequences of climate change and strengthen their resilience.

Skills, jobs and income

Basic education and vocational training create pathways for a self-determined future for young people. Helvetas offers practical, market-oriented training in rural areas and supports government agencies in teacher training and the development of teaching materials — with a focus on girls and women.

Together with the local private sector, we promote sustainable market structures that integrate disadvantaged people and create long-term jobs. Young adults are prepared to start a career and agricultural businesses using new technologies. Farmers learn to tap into additional sources of income — for example, in crafts, construction or tourism.

Voice, inclusion and cohesion

In many countries where we operate, people — especially women — have little say in the decisions that affect their lives. Helvetas strengthens their voices, promotes good governance, prevents conflicts and positions migration in the South as an opportunity.

Together with the authorities, civil society and the private sector, we enable political participation and strengthen local administrations in the fair provision of public services. We also provide targeted support for young people to counteract radicalization and a lack of prospects.

Humanitarian response

The need for humanitarian aid is increasing — primarily due to conflicts and climate-related disasters. Helvetas provides targeted support to people in times of crisis in low- and middle-income countries.

After disasters such as earthquakes or floods, we deliver rapid aid and ensure basic needs are met with supplies of water, food, hygiene and shelter. At the same time, we help communities to rebuild livelihoods and infrastructure — leading to greater resilience and sustainable development.
