Heavy monsoon rains in the late summer of 2022 led to one of the worst floods in Pakistan's history. Around 65% of the country was affected and 72 districts were classified as disaster areas. Health facilities, schools, institutions, bridges, roads, and infrastructure in various parts of the country were severely damaged and the homes and livelihoods of many people were destroyed.
Due to the destruction of livelihoods and agricultural land, those affected lack food and sources of drinking water. Several valleys and villages are still isolated from essential goods and infrastructure, as the roads leading to them have been washed away by floods and landslides.
Given the sheer extent of the damages, the international community provides WASH facilities, food, and shelter in the affected areas.
Helvetas Germany supports affected families with immediate emergency food aid and supplyies farmers with wheat seeds so that they can rebuild the necessary infrastructure and grow vital staple foods. Helvetas is also assisting in restoring the critical drinking water supplies to enable people to return to the affected areas.
