The increasing frequency and impacts of natural disasters - often linked to the effects of climate change - have become major barriers for a sustainable development, affecting particularly the most vulnerable ones. The consideration of disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation (CCA) are not only options but should be considered systematically.

A broad network joins forces
The Swiss NGO DRR Platform meanwhile comprises over 17 Swiss-based organizations. Helvetas was one of the co-founding members in 2011. The platform strives to be the recognized NGO network for disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation (CCA) in Switzerland and for Swiss organizations. As such it supports the work of its member organizations in the field and in Switzerland, but also provides services to staff of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), of NGOs and other institutions working in the fields of DRR and CCA.
The platform's work is oriented towards the following three objectives:
Capacity building and learning
Through the platform’s work, member organizations, field partners as well as other interested organizations strengthen their capacities with regard to resilience, DRR and CCA.
Operationalization and implementation
Thanks to different approaches towards regionalization, the knowledge and competence developed by the platform is conveyed to the field.
Advocacy and policy dialogue
The platform uses existing and develops new partnerships and alliances to increase the voice of the most vulnerable and to advocate for risk informed and climate resilient development and climate justice.
Topics the platform focuses on
The platform is engaged through the following thematic working groups with specific activity lines:
- DRR and CCA mainstreaming in projects and programs
- LRRD (linking relief, rehabilitation and development) / nexus humanitarian aid – development cooperation
- Nature-based solutions / ecosystem-based DRR and adaptation
- Climate change adaptation – “Fit for purpose”
- Working at scale beyond local community-based solutions
- “Leaving no one behind” – towards an inclusive and risk-informed development agenda
Helvetas participates in the platform at operational and management level as a member of the core group and steering group of the platform. Further, Helvetas leads and participates in various topic specific working groups, such as the platform’s work on policy dialogue with Swiss actors, the development of training material and the documentation of good practices from field experience. It also (co-)organizes thematic learning events and trainings.
