The Hungry City: Urban Food Challenges in Mbeya, Tanzania

For the first time in human history, more people live in cities than rural areas. Watch the video below, shown at Helvetas' 2021 Symposium, to learn about the city of Mbeya in southwest Tanzania, which shows the gaps and opportunities facing many cities in the Global South. You will learn about the food systems in Mbeya and the challenges the city's population faces, including weak infrastructure for transportation and distribution, limited knowledge and awareness of a healthy and sustainable diet, and not enough time and money to buy and prepare healthy food.
