Hurricanes, floods, earthquakes: Haiti is facing increasingly destructive disasters. These periodic crisis situations jeopardize the lives, community infrastructure, productive assets and livelihoods of the population. Helvetas supports the involved actors in reducing the effects and managing the risks of disasters by supporting better risk governance for disaster-resilient communities.

Taking responsibility for disaster risk management
In Haiti, disaster and poverty are closely intertwined and hinder progress. Due to the weakness of the local economy, individuals, communities and the country recover only slowly from the impacts of disasters.
Helvetas supports municipalities in their role as leaders in coordinating disaster risk management in their communities. Through the project PARER, Helvetas and its partners support municipalities in preparing for crisis situations that may arise. Together, the actors implement coordination, communication and response measures, taking into account the specificities of women and vulnerable groups.
Helvetas also encourages communities to mobilize their local resources for simple disaster prevention and preparedness measures. Civil society organizations are supported in sharing good practices in order to mobilize external resources and to be able to influence public policies. In addition, the project strengthens women's capacities in risk management for a proactive role responding to their needs.
