The project will contribute to improved living conditions for poor households through increased sustained access to safe and hygienic water as well as improved sanitation and hygiene in the rural areas of Vietnam thanks to the joint effort of HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation, WHO and the National Target Program for Rural Water Supply and Sanitation (NTP III).

Objectives
- Rural poor householders will gain access to safe and hygienic water in substantial manner, resulting from successful application of the National Technical Guidelines for Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage (HWTS);
- Improved sanitation facilities, particularly its pilot application in the HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation three participating provinces of Long An, An Giang and Cao Bang.
Approach
- Close collaboration at national level with WHO Vietnam to support NTP III in the development of Vietnam National Guidelines for Rural Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage;
- Support NTP III to draw lesson learnt and feedback from the pilot implementation of the HWTS at participating provinces (provincial l component) to consolidate and improve the National Guidelines by NTP III, as well to integrate it into the NTP III national wide scale investment in the period of 2013-2015;
- Close collaboration with key local project partners, such as: PCERWAS, DoHs, WUs, districts, and communes.
Key Expected Results
- National Technical Guidelines for Household Water Treatments and Safe Storage (HWTS) is developed, approved, and disseminated to provinces for implementation at household levels;
- Pilot application of the National Technical Guidelines for Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage, and hygiene & sanitation facilities investment is supported at selected households in the three provinces;
- Lesson learnt from the implementation/application of the National Technical Guidelines for Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage in the provinces is used to consolidate and improve the HWTS by NTP III, and integrated into the NTP III national wide scale investment in the period of 2013-2015.
