Return migration is a significant global phenomenon, with Nepal ranking as the 19th largest recipient of remittances worldwide. Despite the growing number of returnee migrant workers, there is limited understanding of their economic productivity and social reintegration challenges. The Reintegration of Migrant Workers (ReMi) project seeks to bridge this knowledge gap and support returnees in re-establishing themselves in Nepal.
Through mixed-method research conducted across eight municipalities in Koshi and Madhesh Provinces, the study examined key migration drivers, reintegration experiences, and remigration decisions. Findings highlight 12 critical moments that shape a returnee’s migration journey, spanning from migration decision-making to reintegration and potential remigration. Economic reintegration, social stigma, and policy gaps remain the primary challenges, with limited employment opportunities and inadequate mental health support affecting returnees' ability to rebuild their lives.
The study provides actionable recommendations for the federal, provincial, and local governments, as well as development partners, to strengthen reintegration policies and interventions. By addressing the "moments that matter" in a migrant’s journey, Helvetas Nepal aims to maximize trust and certainty, ensuring a more positive return migration experience for Nepalese workers.
