A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on March 28, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake. Over 1,000 people are reported to have died and thousands have been injured. Experts fear that up to 10,000 people may have lost their lives. Our staff on the ground describe scenes of chaos, fear and great need.
The full extent of the disaster is only gradually becoming apparent. More than half of all houses have been destroyed, hospitals are overcrowded, and bridges and roads are impassable. Entire villages are cut off from the outside world. And in the middle of it all are people who lost everything in a matter of moments.
Helvetas is committed to providing fair opportunities worldwide – through access to clean water, education and raising citizens' voices.
